As you probably know from ShelfHelp social media posts, I have decided to read The Silverblood Promise by James Logan. Why, you ask? For all the usual reasons: a good cover (the best way to judge a book, I hear), an interesting blurb, and a well written reading sample from inside the book; not to mention, an unusual one: marketing. This book has appeared all over my feeds on X and Facebook. In fact, that is what brought it to my attention. I don’t usually see books marketed, or I ignore it well enough to think that I don’t, but somehow this one caught my eye – probably that cover again. In any event, I will be reading this new release from Tor Publishing and reviewing it. Then, and here’s the part you’re probably here for: I will be giving away my copy to one lucky winner! For those of you with very different algorithms than mine who might be wondering what The Silverblood Promise is, it’s the debut fantasy novel of James Logan. Check out his website (after reading this article) to find out more about him, if you’re interested in that sort of thing. So, what sort of fantasy novel is it? I could say it’s “a ribald, swashbuckling tale of treacheries, lies, and characters as gritty and cutthroat as anyone you’d meet in a tavern at midnight,” but then I’d be plagiarizing James Rollins, the #1 New York Times Bestselling author. Scott Lynch, author of The Lies of Locke Lamora, is also quoted as liking it and comparing it to his own writing. I put very little stock in quotes and comparisons for novels, as most of them are completely off the mark and obviously just marketing hype, but I liked Scott Lynch’s books, and it’s cool that he’s quoted in the marketing. What I gather from this is that the book is probably an epic, maybe grimdark, adventure fantasy. If so, that would be great, as I have enjoyed several books in that vein before. We’ll see. I’ll post a review as soon as I’m finished reading it.
